Tom Meuser, PhD

Applied Gerontologist

Dr. Tom Meuser is a licensed psychologist. From 2018 to 2024, he led the Center for Excellence in Aging & Health at the University of New England. Before moving to Maine, he ran the graduate program in gerontology — the study of aging — at the University of Missouri – St. Louis for many years.

Tom looks at the whole person. He works with older adults and their families, and he welcomes people from all walks of life.

He is an expert in testing that shows how a person is doing. This includes tests of everyday skills, mood and feelings, and memory and thinking. These tests are called screenings. Screening is an important first step. It helps spot problems early and shows what to do next.

Experience & Education

Dr. Meuser is a licensed psychologist with nearly 30 years of experience in the assessment and care of older adults, specializing in aging, dementia, and functional competence. He received his BA in Psychology from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, and both his MA and PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Missouri – St. Louis. He completed his predoctoral internship at the Cleveland VA Medical Center and a postdoctoral fellowship at the Center for Healthy Aging in Akron, Ohio. Dr. Meuser spent nearly two decades in St. Louis — first at the Knight Alzheimer Disease Research Center at Washington University School of Medicine, where he served as Education Core Leader, and later as a tenured professor and Director of Gerontology Programs at the University of Missouri – St. Louis — before relocating to Maine in 2018. He now provides in-home consultation, screening, and neuropsychological evaluation through GeroPsych Maine.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Meuser has held significant leadership roles in the field of aging. He was the Founding Director of the Center for Excellence in Aging & Health at the University of New England, where he also served as a tenured professor. He is a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America, a Commissioner with Volunteer Maine, and a Trustee of The Park Danforth Retirement Community. The author of more than 50 published works on aging, dementia, and caregiving, he has also developed several widely used clinical assessment tools, including the Assessment of Readiness for Mobility Transition and the Marwit-Meuser Caregiver Grief Inventory.
